Topic1 - What Matter Is

Vocabulary:

1.- Mass: the amount of matter in an object.  It is measured with a balance and reported in kilograms.

Example1: mass of human body

Example2: Mass of Earth

Example3: Balance

2.- Volume: the amount of space an object takes up.  It is measured by seeing how many cubes of a chosen size it can fill and it is reported in cubic centimeters.

Example: Volume of geometric figures and how to calculate it

Example2: Measuring volume

3.- Density: a measure of how tightly packed matter is; the amount of mass contained in a given volume.  It can be found by dividing the mass of a sample by its volume (grams / cubic centimeter)

Example1: Density of liquids

Example2: Density of gas

Example3: Density of some substances

4.- Buoyancy: the upward push of an object by the liquid (or gas) the object is placed in.

Example1: Buoyancy of a cube

Example2: Buoyancy of human body

Example3: Buoyancy of a bottle

Example4: Buoyancy of a coke can

Example5: General Principal

5.- Conduct: allow heat or electricity to flow through readily.

Example1: Conductivity

Example1: What is conductivity

Example2: Conductivity Cell

Example3: Conductivity Tester

6.- Insulate: not allow heat or electricity to flow through readily.

Example1: Insulate House Diagram

Example2: Insulate Wall

Example3: Paint to Insulate Roof

Example4: Happy to insulate home

2.- Electromagnetic Spectrum: all the wavelenghts of visible and invisible light in order from short (gamma rays) to long (radio)

Infrared (Used in Remote Controls)

Radio Waves (Used in Microwaves)

Ultraviolet: (Used in Tanning Machines)

X-Ray

Gamma Rays (Moon seen with Gamma Rays)

3.- Laser: a device that produces a thin stream of light of just a few close wavelenghts.
